The British Humane Association (BHA), founded in 1922 and is a grant-making charity dedicated to supporting projects that promote humaneness and compassion. Now in its 102nd year, the BHA awards small grants to UK registered charities working in the UK and overseas, helping them make a positive impact on people, animals, and communities.

Our Mission

The adjective humaneness reflects acting with kindness, sympathy, and consideration toward others—both people and animals—ensuring we cause as little harm as possible.


Our mission is simple yet profound: to encourage actions that reflect empathy and care, improving lives and strengthening communities. Through small grants, generally around £5,000, we help charities deliver vital support where it is most needed—whether through direct relief, community benefit, or aid to individuals in crisis. We believe that humaneness is a guiding principle for a better world. By funding projects that embody compassion and respect, the BHA continues to uphold its founding values and inspire positive change for humanity and the wider community.

 

Who We Support

We offer grants, generally around £5,000, to UK registered charities that fall into one of the following categories:

• Charities directly involved in the relief of inhumane activities and the promotion of humaneness, compassion and welfare for people.
• Charities distributing grants to individuals – providing direct support to those in need.
• Charities providing relief of poverty, sickness, or other community benefits – enhancing the well-being of communities locally and overseas.
